2005 Duramax Water Pump Removal
If required clean and inspect the water pump.
2005 duramax water pump removal. Next remove the lower radiator hose using an 8mm. Remove and discard the water pump o ring and coolant pipe gasket. The clamp is integral to it. You dont necessarily have to remove this pipe to get the pump out.
Remove the lower radiator hose. The water pump is a belt or chain driven engine accessory bolted to the engine above the crankshaft pulley. Remove the water pump. Saves time by locking the flywheel at the transmission instead of having to remove the starter for water pump replacement.
Remove the water pump bolts. Remove the two bolts that hold the coolant bypass pipe to the top of the water pump using 12mm then swing the pipe out of the way towards the front of the truck. This is one step that may be best left to the professionals because if a bolt snaps in the block things get a lot more complicated. Unfortunately water pump bolts are notorious for breaking so care must be taken.
12 loosen the two 12mm bolts that hold the thermostat pipe to the top of the water pump. On 2500 and 3500 pickups remove metal spring loaded inspection plate on the bottom of the transmission. Note the location of the bolts. Remove the engine wiring harness retainer from the inner stud.
The pump housing has an impeller that circulates engine coolant through the cooling system passageways in the engine block and cylinder head on to the radiator where the coolant temperature is reduced. Remove the water pump to engine coolant pipe nuts. The bolts are three different lengths. No picture for this one should be pretty self explanatory 18.
